Un matin, alors qu'il était assis ainsi à cinq ou dix pas du camp, un des nôtres dit en plaisantant à Chink : « Chink, vois-tu ce coyote se moquer de toi ? Allez le chasser !
Chink faisait toujours ce qu'on lui disait. Voulant se distinguer, il se lance à la poursuite du coyote, qui s'enfuit en courant.
C'était une grande course d'un quart de mile, mais rien comparée à celle qui commença lorsque le coyote se retourna et chargea son poursuivant. Chink se rendit immédiatement compte qu'il était en difficulté et se dirigea à toute vitesse vers le camp. Mais le coyote a couru plus vite et a rapidement dépassé le chiot. L'ayant mordu d'un côté, puis de l'autre, il exprima un plaisir total de toute son apparence.
Chink, criant et hurlant, courut aussi vite qu'il le put, et son bourreau le poursuivit sans répit jusqu'au camp. C'est dommage à dire, mais nous nous sommes moqués du pauvre chien ainsi que du coyote, et Chink n'a jamais reçu de sympathie. Une autre expérience de ce type, mais à plus petite échelle, fut largement suffisante pour Chink : à partir de ce moment-là, il décida de laisser le coyote tranquille.
Mais le coyote lui-même a trouvé un divertissement agréable. Désormais, il traînait quotidiennement dans le camp, sachant pertinemment que personne n'oserait lui tirer dessus. De plus, les serrures de toutes nos armes étaient scellées par un agent du gouvernement et il y avait des gardes partout.
Coyote gardait un œil sur Chink et cherchait une occasion de le tourmenter. Le chiot savait maintenant que s’il s’éloignait d’une centaine de pas du camp, le coyote serait là et commencerait à le mordre et à le reconduire jusqu’à la tente de son propriétaire.
Cela a continué jour après jour, et finalement la vie de Chink s'est transformée en pure torture. Il n'osait plus s'éloigner seul de cinquante pas de la tente. Et même lorsqu'il nous accompagnait lors de nos déplacements dans le quartier, ce coyote impudent et vicieux nous suivait sur nos talons, attendant l'occasion de se moquer du pauvre Chink, et gâchait tout le plaisir de sa promenade.
Bill Aubrey a déplacé sa tente à un mile en amont de nous, et le coyote a presque arrêté de visiter notre camp parce qu'il s'est déplacé à la même distance en amont. Comme tout tyran qui ne rencontre aucune opposition, il devenait de jour en jour plus impudent, et Chink éprouvait constamment la plus grande peur, dont son maître ne faisait que rire.
Aubrey a expliqué son geste par la nécessité de trouver de meilleurs pâturages pour le cheval, mais il est vite devenu clair qu'il cherchait simplement la solitude pour pouvoir boire une bouteille de vodka qu'il avait trouvée quelque part sans interférence. Et comme une seule bouteille ne pouvait le satisfaire, le lendemain il sella son cheval et lui dit : « Chink, garde la tente ! - a galopé à travers les montagnes jusqu'à la taverne la plus proche. Et Chink resta docilement, recroquevillé à l'entrée de la tente.
Malgré toute sa stupidité de chiot, Chink était un chien de garde et son propriétaire savait qu'il remplirait régulièrement ses fonctions au mieux de ses capacités.
Dans l'après-midi de ce jour, un montagnard qui passait par là s'arrêta, comme d'habitude, à quelque distance de la tente et cria :
Écoute, Bill ! Salut Bill !
Mais, n'ayant reçu aucune réponse, il se dirigea vers la tente et fut accueilli par Chink de la manière la plus appropriée : sa fourrure se hérissait, il grognait comme un chien adulte. Le montagnard comprit ce qui se passait et poursuivit son chemin.
