A Christmas Carol
(adapted after Ch.Dickens)
Story-teller : Have you ever heard about Christmas Carols? They are religious songs sung at Christmas. At Christmas time groups of people sing carols, both indoors and outdoors. They usually collect money for homeless and poor people. Sometimes carol singers, especially children, go along the streets from house to house, singing in front of each house and asking for money.
But there is a Christmas carol which is not a song or a hymn, it is a story told more than a century and a half ago by one of the most wonderful story-tellers of the world - Charles Dickens, the famous English writer.
A Christmas Carol.
Story-teller : Once upon a time old Ebenezer Scrooge sat busy in his office.
Ebenezer Scrooge : It is Christmas Eve and the weather is cold and foggy. (глядявприоткрытуюдверь) There is my nephew sitting and writing letters. Cratchit . I pay him less than a pound a week. This is not half enough for Cratchit"s large family. But I don"t like spending my money. That is why the fire in my office is very small and Bob Cratchit"s hands are so cold that he can hardly write. But I don"t like spending my money.
Bob Cratchit : Merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!
Ebenezer Scrooge : Humbug! Merry Christmas??!!! You have no right to be merry. You are poor.
Bob Cratchit : You are telling the truth, uncle. I"m poor but I"m a happy man because I"m married a woman whom I love.
Ebenezer Scrooge : I cannot understand this. I think that love is even sillier than a Merry Christmas.
Bob Cratchit : I want to invite you to have Christmas dinner with me and my young wife, uncle Ebenezer.
Ebenezer Scrooge : I don"t want to hear about it!!!
Bob Cratchit : Sorry, uncle. Merry Christmas!
(Silent Night )
Visitors : Sorry, may we come in?
Ebenezer Scrooge : Who are you?
Visitors : We are collecting money for poor people. There are a lot of people who are in need of simplest things , even food and clothes. Can you help them? It is Christmas time, the time for charity.
Ebenezer Scrooge : I won"t give you anything! I never give money for charity! Poor people"s place is in prison and work houses. Go out!
Visitors : Merry Christmas !
We wish you a Merry Christmas ,
Ebenezer Scrooge : Who"s there? Go away!
Now it"s time to go home. (Скруджуходит)
Bob Cratchit : At last it"s the time to close the office. The next day is the 25th of December and the office has to be closed for Christmas. Oh, it"s cold and I haven"t got a coat. Well, it"s OK. I can run fast to play Christmas games with my children.
Ghost : Good evening , Mr .Scrooge .
Ebenezer Scrooge : Who are you? Well, I know you. You are the ghost of Marley, my partner, who died several years ago. Why do you trouble me?
Ghost: I had been very selfish when I was alive. I had been interested only in money and had not cared about people outside my office. That is why now I have no rest and no peace. I wear the chain I made in life link by link. Do you know, Ebenezer Scrooge, the weight and length of the chain you wear yourself? I am here tonight to tell you that you have yet a chance and hope not to go my way. Tonight you will see Three Spirits . The first will come tomorrow at one in the morning. And now I am leaving.
Ebenezer Scrooge : Oh, what was it? I"d better go to bed. (ложитсяспать)
1st Spirit : I am the Ghost of Christmas Past. Let"s travell to the past and remember something from your life.
Ebenezer Scrooge : I remember how lonely and unhappy I was once long ago when I was a schoolboy. I remember my kind sister who brought me home from school on Christmas Eve many years ago and we were together and had the merriest time in the world. My sister had a kind and large heart. but she was not very strong and died soon after she had a child - my nephew, Bob Cratchit.
2nd Spirit : I am the Ghost of Christmas Present. Now I will change your home. I will hang the walls with evergreens: holly, mistletoe, and ivy. I"m making a bright fire in the fireplace, filling the rooms with turkeys, geese, meat, puddings, cakes and fruit. Would you like to have a look at your nephew"s house?
Ebenezer Scrooge : No, no, I wouldn"t!
2nd Spirit : Look! Here they are. Bob, his wife and their six children are at home. They can"t see you, but you can see them and you can hear everything. The smallest boy called Tiny Tim is a very weak child and it is clear that he won"t live long. Mrs.Cratchit is cutting up the goose and the pudding is on the table. There isn"t enough food for such a large family, but nobody notices this. Everybody says to Mrs.Cratchit how much they love the goose and the pudding.
Bob Cratchit : "A Merry Christmas to us all, my dears. God bless us!"
Tiny Tim : "A Merry Christmas!"
All the family : God bless us, everyone!
Bob Cratchit : Let"s drink to Mr.Scrooge who gave us this dinner. Long life to him! A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
2nd Spirit : They are not a rich family, they are not well-dressed, their shoes are cheap, but they are happy, grateful and pleased with one another.
Now look at your nephew"s home too. He is talking to his wife. They are talking about you.
Bob Cratchit : Uncle Scrooge is a funny old man and he isn"t very pleasant either. His money is of no use to him. He can"t do any good with it. I can"t be angry with him. I am sorry for him. I"d like to wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the Old Man!
Ebenezer Scrooge : Who are you?
3d Spirit : I am the Ghost Yet to Come, the Ghost of the Future. I want you to come with me to the centre of London, not far from your office. Look, there"s a group of businessmen. Come up to them and listen to their talk.
One of the businessmen : Look, this is former Mr.Scrooge"s office. Once I saw his grave. There are no flowers there. Nobody comes to remember him.
Ebenezer Scrooge : No, Spirit! Oh, no, no! I am not the man I was. Good Spirit, I"ll start a new life! I will keep Christmas in my heart all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present and the Future. I will always remember this lesson !
Ebenezer Scrooge : Oh, now I am in my room again! How happy I am! (говоритвзал) A Merry Christmas to everybody! A Happy New Year to all the world!
Now I will send a huge turkey to Bob"s house. Where"s my best suit? I want to visit my nephew"s house.
Ebenezer Scrooge : Excuse me, Sir? Can you take some money for charity?
Visito r: My dear sir, I don"t know what to say to such kindness! Thank you. Merry Christmas and God bless you!
Ebenezer Scrooge : (пришелкплемяннику) I am sorry to be greedy and unkind. I ask you to forgive me. I want to say a Merry Christmas to all of you and I want to help you.
Story-teller : Scrooge did it all, and much more. And to Tiny Tim, who did not die, he was a second father. He became as good a friend, as good a master, as good a man, as the good old city knew.Ghosts did not visit him anymore, and people said that he knew how to keep Christmas better than anybody else. And so, as Tiny Tim said, God bless us, Everyone !
Silent Night )
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love"s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

Charles Dickens
A Christmas Carol
Master Peter, and the two ubiquitous young Cratchits went to fetch the goose, with which they soon returned in high procession.
Such a bustle ensued that you might have thought a goose the rarest of all birds; a feathered phenomenon, to which a black swan was a matter of course (нечто само собой разумеющееся) - and in truth it was something very like it in that house. Mrs. Cratchit made the gravy (ready beforehand in a little saucepan) hissing hot; Master Peter mashed the potatoes with incredible vigour; Miss Belinda sweetened up the apple-sauce; Martha dusted the hot plates; Bob took Tiny Tim beside him in a tiny corner at the table; the two young Cratchits set chairs for everybody, not forgetting themselves, and mounting guard upon their posts, crammed spoons into their mouths, lest they should shriek for goose before their turn came to be helped. At last the dishes were set on, and grace (молитва перед едой) was said. It was succeeded by a breathless pause, as Mrs. Cratchit, looking slowly all along the carving-knife, prepared to plunge it in the breast; but when she did, and when the long expected gush of stuffing issued forth, one murmur of delight arose all round the board (накрытый обеденный стол), and even Tiny Tim, excited by the two young Cratchits, beat on the table with the handle of his knife, and feebly cried Hurrah!
There never was such a goose. Bob said he didn"t believe there ever was such a goose cooked. Its tenderness and flavour, size and cheapness, were the themes of universal admiration. Eked out by the apple-sauce and mashed potatoes, it was a sufficient dinner for the whole family; indeed, as Mrs. Cratchit said with great delight (surveying one small atom of a bone upon the dish), they hadn"t ate it all at last! Yet every one had had enough, and the youngest Cratchits in particular, were steeped in sage and onion to the eyebrows! But now, the plates being changed by Miss Belinda, Mrs. Cratchit left the room alone - too nervous to bear witnesses - to take the pudding up and bring it in.

How Little Bear Spent Christmas With Santa”
1. Once upon a time there was a little Bear and Little Bear was trying to write a letter to Santa Clause. For it was after Thanksgiving and Christmas was right around the corner. Little Bear had always been told to write a letter to Santa and make sure that Santa knew what Little Bear needed for Christmas. This year though, Little Bear was just too busy to write a letter, as he had so much to do.
Little Bear was more worried about getting gifts for his mom, dad and all his grandparents that he never had time to stop and think about what he needed. So that letter to Santa never was written.
Little Bear was a kind and thoughtful little bear and he always put others before himself. So he went about making gifts for his parents and grandparents. For his mom he dried hundreds of flowers that he had collected all summer. These he made into a wonderful smelling potpourri, He even found a wonderful, only slightly cracked bowl to put the dried flower pedals in, that his mom would just love to see all winter long. For his dad, he made a fishing lure out of an old wine cork and he painted it like a shark from the ocean. For his grandparents he painted a picture of each of them. He hid the paintings in the woods and covered the paintings with leaves and branches, so that no one would see them and spoil the gift.
2. Now all this was good
and most proper for a little bear to be doing, but Santa Clause got worried, for he kept track of all the kids in the world and here it was a week before Christmas and no letter from Little Bear. Why there was a letter from Little Calf, Little Squirrel, Little Lamb, Little Blue Jay and millions of others, but no Little Bear. Santa got worried…
You see Santa knows good children and Santa knew that Little Bear was an good child. So Santa grabbed one of his Reindeer and rode to see if Little Bear was okay.
Santa peeking around a tree trunk found Little Bear painting pictures, making lures and drying flowers. Santa also found that Little Bear was so worn out at the end of the day, that he had no time to write a letter to Santa and tell Santa what he wanted. Santa went back home to the North Pole and thought about what to give a little bear that was too busy making gifts for his family to care about what he wanted for Christmas.
Santa came up with a trick to play on Little Bear. Santa would send Mister Owl to ask him what he wanted. Mister Owl went to Little Bear as he was asked by Santa and presented his question, “What would you like for Christmas, Little Bear?”
3. Little Bear looked up
in surprise as he was finishing the painting of his great grandpa bear, just two days before Christmas and he paused a few seconds thinking at the last brush stroke and said, “I guess that I do not need anything! For I have all that any little bear could ever want!” Then Little Bear said, “I have hugs, kisses, lots of food and lots of love! What more do I need?” Then he finished the brush stroke and declared the last painting done. In fact he declared all the gifts done and just in time for Christmas which was just two days away…
4. Mister Owl flew back
to Santa in the North Pole and reported what he was told. That left Santa in worse shape than he was. For now he had no idea what to get Little Bear. Then since Christmas was two days off and he had to hurry and get done. Santa put his thoughts on the back burner and hurried to get all the gifts together for all the kids all over the world. All the while not knowing what to get a good Little Bear.
Christmas came and Santa put off going to Little Bears home in the deep woods, until last. In fact Little Bear had just gotten up and everyone in the family was gathered around the Christmas Tree in the house and opened up their gifts. Papa Bear and all the rest noticed that Santa had not been by and they were worried. Little Bear had gifts from all the family and he had good gifts of clothes and toys, but the stocking by the fireplace was empty.
Little Bears gifts to the family were a big hit and Papa Bear was so proud of his new fishing lure that he went immediately and stuck it on his fishing hat. That way he would have it safe until spring came and the rivers and lakes thawed from the winter ice. Momma Bear could not get enough deep sweet breaths of her dried flowers and Little Bears grandparents spent all morning hanging their freshly painted portraits that Little Bear had painted. Everyone was very happy, except Santa never came to the house.
5. Little Bear told everyone why he did not get anything from Santa. As Little Bear said, “I did not ask for anything and I did not want anything, for I have all I need!” Then Little Bear said, “I never wrote a letter to Santa!”
Then as everyone thought about what Little Bear just said. There came a rattle, bang, crunch and boom in the front yard of the Bear home in the woods. They all ran to the windows and looked out to see what had happened. Then what appeared before their eyes as the snow settled from being blown around in a whirlwind. There appeared Santa and his reindeer. Then as they stared with wonder a knock came upon the door.
Little Bear ran to the door, for his family was too shocked to go themselves and politely invited Santa to come inside. Santa stepped inside and asked for pardon that he has interrupted the family day of Christmas. Everyone all stared and Santa took that as an OK that all was right. Then Santa asked to speak to Little Bear for a minute.
Papa Bear shook his head yes and his eyes were as big as tea cups. Santa said, “Little Bear, you never sent me a letter!” Little Bear gulped and thought, “Oops I am in trouble!”
Then Santa went on, “I have never had that happen and when Mister Owl came back to me and said that, “Little Bear said, “I have hugs, kisses, lots of food and lots of love! What more do I need?” I had run out of time to try to think of what to get you, Little Bear. So I decided to come by in person and give you a gift that no other kid will have. For kids love to tell me what they want for Christmas, but you did not want anything!”
6. Santa looked at Little Bear
and said, “If your Papa and the rest of your family say OK! I want to take all of you to the North Pole and have you spend Christmas with Mrs. Santa Clause, the elves, the reindeer and I. For we always have a late Christmas after everyone else has theirs!”
Faster than a Little Bear can say, “Yippee!”, the whole family crowded into the sled with Santa and before they knew it they were at the North Pole having a special Christmas…
They had games to play with the elves and they even got to meet Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer. He had a cold and his nose was even redder than normal. They ate so much food that they all felt like their clothes would pop the buttons and Mrs. Santa Clause had tears in her eyes as they all had to leave…
Santa dropped them off at their Bear home in the woods and as the sleigh lifted into the sky they heard, “Ho Ho Ho and Merry Christmas Little Bear!”
Little Bear said later as his mom tucked him in bed, “I got the best Christmas gift in the whole world and I am glad that my whole family was able to share in it.”
Then he said as his tired eyes closed, “There really is a Santa!”

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
By CHARLES DICKENS
ILLUSTRATED BY GEORGE ALFRED WILLIAMS
New York THE PLATT & PECK CO.
Copyright, 1905, by The Baker & Taylor Company
" He had been Tim"s blood horse all the way from church. "
INTRODUCTION
The combined qualities of the realist and the idealist which Dickens possessed to a remarkable degree, together with his naturally jovial attitude toward life in general, seem to have given him a remarkably happy feeling toward Christmas, though the privations and hardships of his boyhood could have allowed him but little real experience with this day of days.
Dickens gave his first formal expression to his Christmas thoughts in his series of small books, the first of which was the famous "Christmas Carol," the one perfect chrysolite. The success of the book was immediate. Thackeray wrote of it: "Who can listen to objections regarding such a book as this It seems to me a national benefit, and to every man or woman who reads it, a personal kindness. "
This volume was put forth in a very attractive manner, with illustrations by John Leech, who was the first artist to make these characters live, and his drawings were varied and spirited.
There followed upon this four others: "The Chimes," "The Cricket on the Hearth," "The Battle of Life," and "The Haunted Man," with illustrations on their first appearance by Doyle, Maclise, and others. The five are known to-day as the "Christmas Books. " Of them all the "Carol" is the best known and loved, and "The Cricket on the Hearth," although third in the series, is perhaps next in point of popularity, and is especially familiar to Americans through Joseph Jefferson"s characterisation of Caleb Plummer.
Dickens seems to have put his whole self into these glowing little stories. Whoever sees but a clever ghost story in the "Christmas Carol" misses its chief charm and lesson, for there is a different meaning in the movements of Scrooge and his attendant spirits. A new life is brought to Scrooge when he, "running to his window, opened it and put out his head. No fog, no mist; clear, bright, jovial, stirring cold; cold, piping for the blood to dance to; Golden sun-light; Heavenly sky; sweet fresh air; merry bells. Oh, glorious! Glorious! " All this brightness has its attendant shadow, and deep from the childish heart comes that true note of pathos, the ever memorable toast of Tiny Tim, "God bless Us, Every One! " "The Cricket on the Hearth" strikes a different note. Charmingly, poetically, the sweet chirping of the little cricket is associated with human feelings and actions, and at the crisis of the story decides the fate and fortune of the carrier and his wife.
(Charles John Huffam Dickens "A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas" )
