En réponse, le Saint-Synode éthiopien l'a déchu de ses pouvoirs et a nommé Abune Matthias archevêque des États-Unis et du Canada. En octobre 1994, en présence du patriarche Paul, le Collège théologique de la Sainte Trinité à Addis-Abeba a été rouvert. 50 étudiants de ce collège recevront un diplôme en théologie et 100 recevront des diplômes.

Dans la Bible, les Abyssins comptent 81 livres, parmi lesquels, outre les livres canoniques, les livres non canoniques et apocryphes qu'ils vénéraient (le Livre d'Hénoch et le Livre des Jubilés). En même temps, leur rare manuscrit du psautier, de l'Évangile et du livre de service n'est pas profane avec des post-scriptums absurdes et parfois carrément blasphématoires, dans lesquels une sélection de combinaisons de sons dénuées de sens sont déclarées comme étant les noms de Dieu, ayant pouvoir magique, dans la bouche des saints et Mère de Dieu des textes étranges sont inclus et des histoires incroyables sont racontées à leur sujet.
En Éthiopie, il existait des théories christologiques inhabituelles, notamment la doctrine selon laquelle l'union des natures divine et humaine en Christ ne s'est produite qu'après son onction au baptême. Ces enseignements n’ont jamais été officiellement reconnus et ont pour la plupart disparu.
Temples
En termes de multitude d'églises, l'Abyssinie ne peut être comparée qu'à la Russie : vous verrez une croix d'église sur chaque montagne, sur chaque colline, sur chaque colline. Service divin
L'Église abyssinienne reconnaît sept sacrements dont les rites sont proches de ceux des orthodoxes. Le baptême d'un enfant est célébré (principalement par coulée) en conjonction avec l'onction dans l'église par un prêtre : pour le sexe masculin le 40e jour, pour le sexe féminin le 80e jour. Les Abyssins pratiquent également le rite de la circoncision, mais, selon l'explication des défenseurs de l'Église abyssinienne en l'accusant de judaïsme, cette circoncision était acceptée parmi les Abyssins non pas pour accomplir la loi mosaïque, comme chez les Juifs, mais pour le pour le bien de coutume populaire. En plus de la circoncision, il y en a d'autres dans l'Église éthiopienne coutumes religieuses, caractéristique du judaïsme, comme manger de la nourriture et observer le sabbat le jour du sabbat (ainsi que le dimanche). Cela est probablement dû au fait que le christianisme est arrivé en Éthiopie directement depuis la Palestine via l’Arabie du Sud. On pense que le judaïsme était connu en Éthiopie avant même l’arrivée du christianisme.
La communion est enseignée sous deux types séparément. Le sacrement du mariage était réservé presque uniquement au clergé et aux rois, tandis que les laïcs vivaient dans la plupart des cas dans des mariages civils, se transformant parfois en polygamie. L'Église lutte contre cela par l'excommunication de la communion, de sorte que presque seuls les personnes âgées et les enfants s'approchent du sacrement de communion.
Les services ordinaires sont les mêmes que ceux des orthodoxes.
La liturgie éthiopienne est d'origine alexandrine (copte), mais elle a été influencée par la tradition syrienne. Jusqu'à récemment, la liturgie était servie dans l'ancienne langue du Ge'ez. De nos jours, l’amharique moderne est de plus en plus utilisé dans les paroisses.
Une condition nécessaire à la célébration de la liturgie est la présence sur le trône de l'arche, ou tabot ( planche de bois avec une image des évangélistes dans les coins et une croix au milieu), qu'il est également d'usage de porter enveloppé dans des foulards en soie lors des processions religieuses. La liturgie est toujours servie par au moins trois prêtres et deux diacres. L'Évangile est lu par un prêtre et non par un diacre ; ce dernier n'est lu que par l'Apôtre.
Après l'exclamation du diacre : « Priez pour la paix et embrassez-vous » (correspondant à la nôtre : « Aimons-nous les uns les autres... »), dans la plupart des églises abyssiniennes, il y a des baisers mutuels. Toutes les réponses aux exclamations du clergé sont prononcées par toutes les personnes debout dans le temple. Dans certaines prières liturgiques et dans l'hymne du Trisagion, il y a des ajouts monophysites.
La nuit de l'Epiphanie, ça arrive procession religieuse sur l'eau, accompagné de danses, et on accomplit la grande bénédiction de l'eau, au cours de laquelle on tire en immergeant la croix. Lors de cette fête, avant le coucher du soleil, tout le monde se met à l'eau et se baigne pendant que les prêtres prient.
A la veille de la fête de l'Exaltation de la Croix du Seigneur, une immense gerbe de perches liées avec des matériaux brillants est placée sur la place ou sur la montagne en dehors de la ville ; La nuit, une procession aux flambeaux se dirige vers elle, qui, au son d'une trompette et de coups de feu, fait trois fois le tour de la gerbe, après quoi celle-ci est allumée aux flambeaux pendant que l'on chante les stichera de la croix.
En général, malgré sa proximité avec l'orthodoxie, la liturgie abyssinienne, ainsi que les insertions monophysites, sont également obscurcies par diverses sortes rituels empruntés à d’autres religions.
Messages
Les jeûnes sont proches en durée et en sévérité de ceux des orthodoxes, et l'une des différences est le jeûne qui n'est pas exigé pendant notre semaine du publicain et du pharisien, commune à tous les monophysites et nestoriens.
À l'exception de toutes ces particularités propres aux Abyssins qui sont étrangères à la véritable Église du Christ, sinon la doctrine et le culte de l'Église abyssinienne, ou éthiopienne, restent proches de l'Orthodoxie et, selon le témoignage de certains, des Abyssins modernes se considèrent comme étant entièrement de la même foi que les Grecs, les Russes et les autres peuples orthodoxes, malgré le fait qu'en tant que monophysites, ils sont en communion avec les Églises copte et arménienne de même foi.
Métropole de l'Église orthodoxe axoumite d'Alexandrie
Métropole d'Axoum(Grec Ιερά Μητρόπολη Αξώμης ) - diocèse de l'Église orthodoxe d'Alexandrie sur le territoire de l'Éthiopie, de l'Érythrée, de Djibouti et de la Somalie.
A l'époque de la prédication de l'apôtre Matthieu, le royaume d'Axoum existait sur le territoire de la Corne de l'Afrique, dont les dirigeants commencèrent à professer le christianisme au milieu du IVe siècle. Sous saint Athanase d'Alexandrie (328-373), saint Frumentius fut installé comme premier évêque d'Axoum, s'y rendant avec son frère, le prêtre Edesius.
Depuis le VIIe siècle, le diocèse d'Aksumite, comme toute l'Église éthiopienne, relevait de la juridiction de l'Église copte monophysite. La métropole orthodoxe d'Axoum a été rétablie en 1908, sous la direction du patriarche Photios d'Alexandrie. Cet acte n’a cependant pas été reconnu par les autorités civiles éthiopiennes. Le 16 novembre 1931 seulement, le patriarche Mélétius II nomme le métropolite Nicolas d'Axoum (Abdallah), syrien d'origine.
En 1914, il fut construit cathédrale Saint Frumentius à Addis-Abeba.
En 1981, la confrérie caritative Saint-Frumentius a été fondée sous la métropole.
En 1994, le Trinity Theological College d’Addis-Abeba a été ouvert.
En 1986, l'école supérieure de l'Église a été fondée au monastère Saint-Paul, près d'Addis-Abeba.
Le troupeau de la métropole d'Axoum est composé de Grecs orthodoxes, d'Éthiopiens, de Russes, de Serbes, de Bulgares et d'autres peuples orthodoxes européens, ainsi que d'Africains vivant en Éthiopie, en Érythrée, à Djibouti et en Somalie.

L’Éthiopie est un pays unique, et pas seulement à l’échelle africaine. Non entièrement colonisée par qui que ce soit, s'étendant entre des chaînes de montagnes dont beaucoup sont aujourd'hui inaccessibles, elle abrite plus de 80 langues et plus de 100 groupes ethniques. Et la plupart d'entre eux étaient unis par l'absence de routes et de langue commune par la foi : le christianisme est arrivé en Éthiopie plus tôt qu'en Russie (de plus de six siècles) et même en Europe.

Selon le Nouveau Testament, cela s'est produit au Ier siècle : l'apôtre Philippe a baptisé un eunuque qui gardait les trésors de la reine locale. Nouvelle foi s'est répandu extrêmement rapidement dans l'ancienne Éthiopie, devenant déjà au IVe siècle la religion d'État de l'un des royaumes locaux (on pense que c'était le troisième cas dans l'histoire après l'Arménie et le royaume d'Edesse). Aujourd'hui, selon les statistiques, plus de 60 pour cent des citoyens du pays professent le christianisme. L'Église éthiopienne est considérée comme indépendante, se considère comme faisant partie de la branche orthodoxe et présente des similitudes avec l'orthodoxie russe dans son calendrier, ses jours de jeûne, certains rituels et fêtes religieuses (ils coïncident). Contrairement aux pays où la religion a cessé de faire partie la vie quotidienne, en Ethiopie, même les jeunes ne passent pas devant une église sans se signer et mettre la tête sur le seuil. Presque tout le monde porte croix en bois autour du cou, des symboles religieux ornent souvent les voitures et les auto-rickshaws. Mais on voit rarement de vraies icônes : peu d'entre elles ont survécu même dans les églises, la plupart des icônes sont imprimées sur une imprimante ; En fait, la peinture d'icônes éthiopienne originale est très belle, quoique un peu naïve, semblable aux dessins d'enfants, mais, malheureusement, elle est rare.

Les églises orthodoxes sont présentes dans tout le pays, du plus petit village à la capitale. Dans les villages, les églises ont traditionnellement la forme d'une tente, dans les villes plus anciennes - d'une croix, et à Addis-Abeba (la capitale) elles ont un aspect très européen : l'influence italienne se fait sentir (Rome a cherché à conquérir l'Éthiopie dès la fin du XIXe siècle , qui s'est terminée par une guerre sanglante sous Mussolini). Quoi qu'il en soit, en architecture comme en politique, l'Éthiopie a défendu son indépendance. Des croix sur Églises orthodoxes toujours complexe et décoré de boules qui représentent des œufs d'autruche (cela symbolise la force de la foi). La décoration des églises peut être qualifiée d'ascétique par rapport à nos églises - quelques icônes, fleurs en plastique, perles, quelques bougies. Les sols sont recouverts de tapis, car il est d'usage d'entrer dans le temple sans chaussures, et pendant les offices, beaucoup s'assoient par terre.
Les services divins ont lieu deux fois par jour, un court le matin et un principal au milieu de la journée (il dure au moins deux heures, et à cette heure il est interdit d'entrer dans le temple les jours fériés) ; un service de nuit. D'ailleurs, il n'est pas difficile de remarquer l'heure du service : pendant la journée les villes sont vides et on ne peut qu'être surpris du nombre de personnes prêtes à consacrer plusieurs heures à la prière quotidienne.
L'un des belles fonctionnalités Tradition chrétienne éthiopienne : tous les croyants (femmes et hommes) se rendent au temple en portant un long foulard blanc qui couvre presque tout le corps. Les prêtres portent des vêtements rouges ou bleus. On peut souvent voir des paroissiens avec un bâton, mais ce n'est pas un hommage à la tradition. Le bâton aide à supporter une longue liturgie.
Bien que le royaume d'Axoum à l'est du pays ait été le premier à accepter la nouvelle religion, les anciens centres de l'orthodoxie (églises des XIIe-XIVe siècles) ont été préservés non seulement là-bas, mais aussi dans les montagnes du nord - en Lalibela et Gondar. Là, chaque jour, d'anciens rituels sont soigneusement restaurés : l'eau et le pain sont bénis, les baptêmes et les communions sont célébrés. La ville de Lalibela, du nom de Saint Gebre Meskel Lalibela, roi d'Éthiopie aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles, est particulièrement impressionnante. Selon la légende, ce roi a vécu longtemps à Jérusalem et après sa capture par les musulmans en 1187, il a décidé de construire sa capitale sous le nom de Nouvelle Jérusalem. Depuis lors, de nombreux objets de la ville portent des noms bibliques : même le fleuve qui coule dans la ville s'appelait Jourdain.
L'église Beth Georgis de Saint-Georges est l'une des 11 églises monolithiques de Lalibela. L'entrée du temple se fait par un tunnel creusé dans le corps de la montagne.
Au XIIe siècle, l'un des monuments de la foi les plus impressionnants a commencé à être construit dans la même ville : un complexe de 11 églises monolithiques taillées dans la pierre solide sous le niveau du sol. Les temples sont reliés entre eux par des tunnels souterrains (ils symbolisent l'enfer), et la sortie de chacune des églises symbolisait la venue à Dieu. Parmi les temples de Lalibela, le plus élégant est Bet Giorgis - son toit a la forme d'une croix à la surface de la terre et le temple lui-même s'étend sur 13 mètres dans l'épaisseur de la montagne. Il y a Beth Lehem (Bethléem) - la Maison du Pain, où l'eau et un type de pain local - l'injara - sont bénis. D’autres temples nous rappellent également Jérusalem, dont tous les noms commencent par Beth, qui signifie maison en hébreu.
Prêtre au service
À Lalibela, Gondar et Aksoum, les anciens monuments du christianisme ont été préservés, mais dans chaque ville et village, les habitants construisent de petites églises avec leurs propres moyens. Chaque communauté a un berger, une personne qui a des connaissances sur la médecine, la religion, l'ordre mondial, l'histoire, il aide les paroissiens et les guide. Pour l'Éthiopie, où zones rurales peu de gens savent lire et écrire ; les prêtres formés dans les écoles paroissiales sont les principales sources de connaissances sur le monde. La confiance en eux est illimitée.
L’Orthodoxie est l’âme de l’Éthiopie, elle l’a unifiée et l’a aidée à résister aux invasions des infidèles et des colonialistes. Tout cela est visible à l’œil nu, tout comme le fait qu’une religiosité aussi profonde entrave le développement. Beaucoup sont prêts à passer des heures et des jours en prière, se souciant peu de la vie quotidienne, et le niveau de pauvreté est élevé et cela se voit aussi. J'aimerais espérer que les nouvelles générations non seulement préserveront la foi ancienne, mais qu'en même temps elles prendront la vie en main - comme d'ailleurs leurs ancêtres l'ont fait autrefois, défendant leurs églises et leur foi contre la pression de nombreux conquérants qui croyait en des dieux complètement différents.
Église orthodoxe éthiopienne
Selon une ancienne tradition, le premier grand éducateur chrétien des Éthiopiens fut saint Frumentius, un citoyen romain de Tyr, qui fit naufrage sur la côte africaine de la mer Rouge. Il gagna la confiance de l'empereur Aksoum et convertit bientôt son fils, le futur empereur Ezana, au christianisme, qui déclara le christianisme religion d'État en 330. Frumentius fut ensuite ordonné évêque par saint Athanase d'Alexandrie et retourna en Éthiopie, où il poursuivit l'évangélisation du pays.
Vers 480, les Neuf Saints arrivèrent en Éthiopie et y commencèrent leur œuvre missionnaire. Selon la légende, ils seraient originaires de Rome, de Constantinople et de Syrie, qu'ils durent quitter en raison de leur opposition à la christologie de Chalcédoine. Ils restèrent quelque temps au monastère de Saint-Pacôme en Égypte. L'influence fixe (ainsi que le lien traditionnel avec les coptes en Égypte) explique pourquoi l'Église éthiopienne a rejeté Chalcédoine. On pense que les « Neuf Saints » ont finalement mis fin aux vestiges du paganisme en Éthiopie, inculqué une tradition monastique et apporté une énorme contribution au développement de la littérature religieuse : ils ont traduit la Bible et d'autres ouvrages religieux en éthiopien classique. Les monastères se sont répandus dans tout le pays et sont rapidement devenus d’importants centres spirituels et intellectuels.

Depuis l’Antiquité, tous les évêques d’Éthiopie étaient des optos égyptiens nommés par le Patriarcat copte. De plus, pendant de nombreux siècles, le seul évêque d’Éthiopie était un métropolite copte. Depuis le début du XXe siècle, l’Église éthiopienne a commencé à revendiquer une plus grande autonomie et l’élection d’évêques locaux. En 1929, quatre évêques éthiopiens locaux furent ordonnés assistants du métropolite copte. En 1948, avec l'aide de l'empereur Haïlé Sélassié (qui régna de 1930 à 1974), un accord fut conclu avec les coptes sur l'élection d'un métropolite local après la mort du métropolite Cyrille. À sa mort en 1951, une réunion du clergé et des Mipiens élut Basile éthiopien comme métropolite. C’est ainsi que fut établie l’autonomie de l’Église éthiopienne. En 1959, le Patriarcat copte a confirmé le métropolite Basile comme premier patriarche de l’Église orthodoxe éthiopienne.
Il existait une faculté de théologie orthodoxe éthiopienne (Holy Trinity College) à l'Université d'Addis-Abeba, mais le gouvernement l'a fermée en 1974. La même année, l'Église crée le Collège Saint-Paul à Addis-Abeba pour former les futurs prêtres en théologie. Le désir de devenir prêtre est courant parmi les Éthiopiens orthodoxes ; en 1988, le pays comptait 25 000 membres du clergé. Pour leur offrir une éducation adéquate, six « centres de formation de prêtres » ont récemment été ouverts dans différentes régions d’Éthiopie. Presque toutes les paroisses ont une école du dimanche.
L’Église éthiopienne, surtout ces dernières années, aide activement ceux qui en ont besoin. Elle vient en aide aux réfugiés et aux victimes de la sécheresse, et de nombreux orphelinats ont été créés sous son patronage.
Jusqu’à la révolution socialiste de 1974, qui renversa l’empereur et installa le colonel Meng-ntu Haile Mariam à la tête du gouvernement, l’Église orthodoxe éthiopienne était l’Église d’État. Peu après la révolution, l’Église du Bouddha fut séparée de l’État et la plupart des terres de l’Église furent nationalisées. Cela a servi de signal pour le début d'une campagne antireligieuse dans tout le pays.
Après la chute du gouvernement communiste en mai 1991, le patriarche Mercure (élu en 1988) fut accusé de collaboration avec le régime de Mengistu et fut contraint de démissionner de son poste. Le 5 juillet 1992, le Saint-Synode a élu Abuna Paul comme cinquième patriarche de l'Église orthodoxe éthiopienne. Sous le régime marxiste, il a passé sept ans en prison après que le patriarche Théophile (destitué en 1976, tué en prison en 1979) l'ait ordonné évêque en 1975 sans autorisation de l'État. En 1983, Pavel est libéré de prison et passe plusieurs années aux États-Unis. Le patriarche Mercure, qui a émigré au Kenya, a refusé de reconnaître l'élection de Paul. Mgr Ezehak, archevêque éthiopien des États-Unis, n'a pas non plus reconnu cette élection et a rompu en 1992 la communion liturgique avec le patriarcat. En réponse, le Saint-Synode éthiopien l'a déchu de ses pouvoirs et a nommé Abune Matthias archevêque des États-Unis et du Canada. Parce que l’archevêque Ezehak bénéficie du soutien de nombreux Éthiopiens orthodoxes en Amérique, il y a eu une division au sein de la communauté éthiopienne de ce pays.
En octobre 1994, en présence du patriarche Paul, le Collège théologique de la Sainte Trinité à Addis-Abeba a été rouvert. 50 étudiants de ce collège recevront un diplôme en théologie et 100 recevront des diplômes.
Les informations suivantes sur le nombre de croyants sont données par le Conseil œcuménique des Églises. Selon des sources éthiopiennes crédibles, ce nombre est estimé à 30 millions, soit Les Éthiopiens orthodoxes représentent environ 60 % de la population totale de 55 millions d’habitants.

La tradition de l'Église éthiopienne fait remonter ses débuts aux temps apostoliques, lorsque l'eunuque de la reine éthiopienne Candace fut baptisé par l'apôtre Philippe (Actes 8 : 26-30).
