Son livre, Les armes secrètes du Troisième Reich, avance la théorie selon laquelle la bombe atomique a été créée en Allemagne et que les États-Unis n'ont fait qu'imiter les résultats du projet Manhattan. Mais parlons-en plus en détail.
Otto Hahn, le célèbre physicien et radiochimiste allemand, et un autre éminent scientifique Fritz Straussmann, ont découvert la fission du noyau d'uranium en 1938, donnant essentiellement lieu à des travaux sur la création d'armes nucléaires. En 1938, les développements atomiques n’étaient pas classés, mais pratiquement aucun pays, à l’exception de l’Allemagne, n’y prêtait l’attention voulue. Ils n’en voyaient pas vraiment l’utilité. Mais le groupe Alsos a poursuivi ses recherches actives dans l'Allemagne déjà vaincue - jusqu'à la toute fin mai. Comment fonctionne une bombe nucléaire ?

Les conséquences de l’explosion d’une bombe atomique sont désastreuses pour tous les êtres vivants. Premiers essais
Tout au long de l’histoire de la bombe atomique, l’Amérique a montré le plus grand intérêt pour sa création. À la fin de 1941, les dirigeants du pays ont alloué d'énormes sommes d'argent et de ressources à ce domaine. Robert Oppenheimer, considéré par beaucoup comme le créateur de la bombe atomique, a été nommé chef de projet. En fait, il fut le premier à pouvoir donner vie à l’idée des scientifiques. Ainsi, le 16 juillet 1945, le premier essai de bombe atomique eut lieu dans le désert du Nouveau-Mexique. L’Amérique a alors décidé que pour mettre fin complètement à la guerre, elle devait vaincre le Japon, allié de l’Allemagne nazie. Le Pentagone a rapidement sélectionné les cibles pour les premières attaques nucléaires, censées devenir une illustration frappante de la puissance des armes américaines.
Le 6 août 1945, la bombe atomique américaine, cyniquement surnommée « Little Boy », est larguée sur la ville d’Hiroshima. Le tir s'est avéré tout simplement parfait: la bombe a explosé à une altitude de 200 mètres du sol, ce qui a provoqué d'horribles dégâts dans la ville. Dans les zones éloignées du centre, des poêles à charbon ont été renversés, provoquant de graves incendies.
L'éclair lumineux a été suivi d'une vague de chaleur qui, en 4 secondes, a réussi à faire fondre les tuiles des toits des maisons et à incinérer les poteaux télégraphiques. Trois jours après le bombardement d'Hiroshima, l'Amérique a attaqué une autre ville japonaise : Nagasaki. La seconde explosion eut les mêmes conséquences désastreuses que la première.
En quelques secondes, deux bombes atomiques ont détruit des centaines de milliers de personnes. L’onde de choc a pratiquement effacé Hiroshima de la surface de la Terre. Plus de la moitié des résidents locaux (environ 240 000 personnes) sont décédés immédiatement des suites de leurs blessures. Dans la ville de Nagasaki, environ 73 000 personnes sont mortes des suites de l'explosion. Beaucoup de ceux qui ont survécu ont été soumis à de graves radiations, qui ont provoqué l’infertilité, le mal des rayons et le cancer. En conséquence, certains des survivants sont morts dans de terribles souffrances. L’utilisation de la bombe atomique à Hiroshima et Nagasaki a illustré la terrible puissance de ces armes.

Après le bombardement des villes japonaises, J.V. Staline s'est rendu compte que la création d'une bombe atomique soviétique était une question de sécurité nationale. Le 20 août 1945, un comité sur l'énergie nucléaire est créé en URSS et L. Beria en est nommé chef.
Il convient de noter que des travaux dans ce sens sont menés en Union soviétique depuis 1918 et qu'en 1938, une commission spéciale sur le noyau atomique a été créée à l'Académie des sciences. Avec le déclenchement de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, tous les travaux dans ce sens furent gelés.
En 1943, des agents du renseignement de l'URSS ont transféré d'Angleterre des matériaux provenant d'ouvrages scientifiques fermés dans le domaine de l'énergie nucléaire. Ces documents montraient que les travaux des scientifiques étrangers sur la création d’une bombe atomique avaient fait de sérieux progrès. Dans le même temps, les résidents américains ont contribué à l’introduction d’agents soviétiques fiables dans les principaux centres de recherche nucléaire américains. Les agents transmettaient des informations sur les nouveaux développements aux scientifiques et ingénieurs soviétiques.
Termes de référence
Lorsqu'en 1945 la question de la création d'une bombe nucléaire soviétique devint presque une priorité, l'un des chefs de projet, Yu. Khariton, élabora un plan pour le développement de deux versions du projectile. Le 1er juin 1946, le plan est signé par la haute direction.
Selon la mission, les concepteurs devaient construire un RDS (moteur à réaction spécial) de deux modèles :
- RDS-1. Une bombe avec une charge de plutonium qui explose par compression sphérique. L'appareil a été emprunté aux Américains.
- RDS-2. Un canon-bombe avec deux charges d'uranium convergeant dans le canon de l'arme avant d'atteindre une masse critique.
Dans l’histoire du célèbre RDS, la formulation la plus courante, quoique humoristique, était l’expression « La Russie le fait elle-même ». Il a été inventé par l'adjoint de Yu Khariton, K. Shchelkin. Cette phrase exprime très précisément l'essence du travail, du moins pour RDS-2.
Lorsque l’Amérique apprit que l’Union soviétique possédait les secrets de la création d’armes nucléaires, elle commença à souhaiter une escalade rapide de la guerre préventive. À l'été 1949, apparaît le plan « Troyan », selon lequel il était prévu de commencer le 1er janvier 1950. lutte contre l'URSS. Ensuite, la date de l'attaque a été repoussée au début de 1957, mais à la condition que tous les pays de l'OTAN y rejoignent.
Essais

Cela a brisé le monopole américain sur ces armes, car depuis 1945, ils étaient la seule puissance nucléaire. L'article est consacré à la description de l'histoire de l'émergence de la bombe nucléaire soviétique, ainsi qu'à la caractérisation des conséquences de ces événements pour l'URSS.
Histoire de la création
En 1941, des représentants de l'URSS à New York ont informé Staline qu'une réunion de physiciens se tenait aux États-Unis, consacrée au développement d'armes nucléaires. Les scientifiques soviétiques des années 1930 ont également travaillé sur la recherche atomique, la plus célèbre étant la division de l'atome par des scientifiques de Kharkov dirigés par L. Landau. Cependant, il n’a jamais été réellement utilisé dans des armes. Outre les États-Unis, l’Allemagne nazie y a travaillé. Fin 1941, les États-Unis lancent leur projet atomique. Staline l'apprit au début de 1942 et signa un décret sur la création d'un laboratoire en URSS pour créer un projet atomique, l'académicien I. Kurchatov en devint le chef.
Il existe une opinion selon laquelle le travail des scientifiques américains a été accéléré par les développements secrets de collègues allemands venus en Amérique. Quoi qu'il en soit, à l'été 1945, lors de la Conférence de Potsdam, le nouveau président américain G. Truman informa Staline de l'achèvement des travaux sur une nouvelle arme : la bombe atomique. Par ailleurs, pour démontrer le travail des scientifiques américains, le gouvernement américain a décidé de tester la nouvelle arme au combat : les 6 et 9 août, des bombes ont été larguées sur deux villes japonaises, Hiroshima et Nagasaki. C’était la première fois que l’humanité découvrait une nouvelle arme. C'est cet événement qui a obligé Staline à accélérer le travail de ses scientifiques. I. Kurchatov a été convoqué par Staline et a promis de répondre à toutes les demandes du scientifique, à condition que le processus se déroule le plus rapidement possible. De plus, un comité d'État a été créé sous l'égide du Conseil des commissaires du peuple, qui a supervisé le projet atomique soviétique. Il était dirigé par L. Beria.
Le développement s'est déplacé vers trois centres :
- Le bureau d'études de l'usine de Kirov, travaillant à la création d'équipements spéciaux.
- Une usine diffuse dans l'Oural, censée travailler à la création d'uranium enrichi.
- Centres chimiques et métallurgiques où le plutonium a été étudié. C’est cet élément qui a été utilisé dans la première bombe nucléaire de type soviétique.
En 1946, le premier centre nucléaire unifié soviétique est créé. Il s'agissait de l'installation secrète Arzamas-16, située dans la ville de Sarov (région de Nijni Novgorod). En 1947, le premier réacteur nucléaire a été créé dans une entreprise près de Tcheliabinsk. En 1948, un terrain d'entraînement secret a été créé sur le territoire du Kazakhstan, près de la ville de Semipalatinsk-21. C'est ici que fut organisée, le 29 août 1949, la première explosion de la bombe atomique soviétique RDS-1. Cet événement a été gardé complètement secret, mais l'aviation américaine du Pacifique a pu enregistrer une forte augmentation des niveaux de rayonnement, preuve des tests d'une nouvelle arme. Déjà en septembre 1949, G. Truman annonçait la présence d'une bombe atomique en URSS. Officiellement, l’URSS n’a admis la présence de ces armes qu’en 1950.
Plusieurs conséquences principales du développement réussi des armes atomiques par les scientifiques soviétiques peuvent être identifiées :
- Perte du statut des États-Unis en tant qu’État unique doté de l’arme atomique. Cela a non seulement égalisé l'URSS avec les États-Unis en termes de puissance militaire, mais a également forcé ces derniers à réfléchir à chacune de leurs mesures militaires, puisqu'ils devaient désormais craindre la réponse des dirigeants de l'URSS.
- La présence d’armes atomiques en URSS a assuré son statut de superpuissance.
- Après que les États-Unis et l’URSS se soient retrouvés à égalité en matière de disponibilité d’armes atomiques, la course à leur quantité a commencé. Les États ont dépensé d’énormes sommes d’argent pour surpasser leurs concurrents. De plus, des tentatives ont commencé pour créer des armes encore plus puissantes.
- Ces événements marquent le début de la course au nucléaire. De nombreux pays ont commencé à investir des ressources pour élargir la liste des États dotés d’armes nucléaires et assurer leur sécurité.
Le développement des armes nucléaires soviétiques a commencé avec l’extraction d’échantillons de radium au début des années 1930. En 1939, les physiciens soviétiques Yuliy Khariton et Yakov Zeldovich ont calculé la réaction en chaîne de fission des noyaux d'atomes lourds. L'année suivante, des scientifiques de l'Institut ukrainien de physique et de technologie ont soumis des demandes pour la création d'une bombe atomique, ainsi que des méthodes de production d'uranium 235. Pour la première fois, des chercheurs ont proposé d'utiliser des explosifs conventionnels comme moyen d'enflammer la charge, ce qui créerait une masse critique et déclencherait une réaction en chaîne.
Cependant, l'invention des physiciens de Kharkov avait ses défauts et leur candidature, après avoir été soumise à diverses autorités, a finalement été rejetée. Le dernier mot revient au directeur de l'Institut du radium de l'Académie des sciences de l'URSS, l'académicien Vitaly Khlopin : « … la candidature n'a aucun fondement réel. En plus de cela, il contient essentiellement beaucoup de choses fantastiques... Même s'il était possible de mettre en œuvre une réaction en chaîne, l'énergie qui serait libérée serait mieux utilisée pour alimenter les moteurs, par exemple les avions.
Les appels des scientifiques à la veille de la Grande Guerre patriotique auprès du commissaire du peuple à la défense Sergueï Timochenko ont également échoué. En conséquence, le projet d’invention a été enterré sur une étagère étiquetée « top secret ».

En 1990, des journalistes demandaient à l'un des auteurs du projet de bombe, Vladimir Spinelle : « Si vos propositions de 1939-1940 étaient appréciées au niveau gouvernemental et que vous receviez un soutien, quand l'URSS pourra-t-elle disposer de l'arme atomique ?
"Je pense qu'avec les capacités dont disposait plus tard Igor Kurchatov, nous l'aurions reçu en 1945", a répondu Spinelle.
Cependant, c'est Kurchatov qui a réussi à utiliser dans ses développements des projets américains réussis visant à créer une bombe au plutonium, obtenue par les services de renseignement soviétiques.
Course atomique
Avec le déclenchement de la Grande Guerre patriotique, la recherche nucléaire fut temporairement arrêtée. Les principaux instituts scientifiques des deux capitales ont été évacués vers des régions reculées.
Le chef du renseignement stratégique, Lavrenti Beria, était au courant des développements des physiciens occidentaux dans le domaine des armes nucléaires. Pour la première fois, les dirigeants soviétiques ont appris la possibilité de créer une super-arme auprès du « père » de la bombe atomique américaine, Robert Oppenheimer, qui s'est rendu en Union soviétique en septembre 1939. Au début des années 40, les hommes politiques et les scientifiques ont pris conscience de la réalité de l'obtention d'une bombe nucléaire, mais aussi du fait que son apparition dans l'arsenal de l'ennemi mettrait en danger la sécurité des autres puissances.
En 1941, le gouvernement soviétique reçut les premières données de renseignement des États-Unis et de la Grande-Bretagne, où des travaux actifs sur la création de super-armes avaient déjà commencé. Le principal informateur était « l’espion atomique » soviétique Klaus Fuchs, un physicien allemand impliqué dans les programmes nucléaires des États-Unis et de la Grande-Bretagne.

L'académicien Piotr Kapitsa, s'exprimant le 12 octobre 1941 lors d'une réunion de scientifiques antifascistes, a déclaré : « L'un des moyens importants guerre moderne sont des explosifs. La science indique les possibilités fondamentales d'augmenter la force explosive de 1,5 à 2 fois... Les calculs théoriques montrent que si une bombe puissante et moderne peut, par exemple, détruire un bloc entier, alors une bombe atomique, même de petite taille, pourrait, si possible, détruire facilement une grande ville métropolitaine de plusieurs millions d’habitants. Mon opinion personnelle est que les difficultés techniques qui s'opposent à l'utilisation de l'énergie intra-atomique sont encore très grandes. Cette question est encore douteuse, mais il est très probable qu’il y ait ici de grandes opportunités.»
En septembre 1942, le gouvernement soviétique adopta un décret « Sur l'organisation des travaux sur l'uranium ». Au printemps de l'année suivante, le Laboratoire n°2 de l'Académie des sciences de l'URSS est créé pour produire la première bombe soviétique. Enfin, le 11 février 1943, Staline signa la décision du GKO sur le programme de travail visant à créer une bombe atomique. Au début, c'est le vice-président du Comité de défense de l'État, Viatcheslav Molotov, qui a été chargé de diriger cette tâche importante. C'est lui qui devait trouver un directeur scientifique pour le nouveau laboratoire.
Molotov lui-même, dans une note datée du 9 juillet 1971, rappelle ainsi sa décision : « Nous travaillons sur ce sujet depuis 1943. J'ai été chargé de répondre à leur place, de trouver une personne capable de créer la bombe atomique. Les agents de sécurité m'ont donné une liste de physiciens fiables sur lesquels je pouvais compter et j'ai choisi. Il appela chez lui Kapitsa, l'académicien. Il a déclaré que nous n'y sommes pas prêts et que la bombe atomique n'est pas une arme de cette guerre, mais une question d'avenir. Ils ont demandé à Joffe - lui aussi avait une attitude quelque peu floue à ce sujet. Bref, j'avais le plus jeune et encore inconnu Kurchatov, il n'avait pas le droit de bouger. Je l'ai appelé, nous avons discuté, il m'a fait bonne impression. Mais il a dit qu’il y avait encore beaucoup d’incertitude. Ensuite, j'ai décidé de lui remettre nos documents de renseignement : les agents du renseignement avaient fait un travail très important. Kourtchatov a passé plusieurs jours au Kremlin, avec moi, à discuter de ces documents.»
Au cours des semaines suivantes, Kourtchatov a étudié minutieusement les données reçues par les services de renseignement et a rédigé un avis d'expert : « Ces matériaux sont d'une importance énorme et inestimable pour notre État et pour la science... L'ensemble des informations indique faisabilité technique résoudre l’ensemble du problème de l’uranium dans un délai beaucoup plus court que ne le pensent nos scientifiques, qui ne connaissent pas l’avancement des travaux sur ce problème à l’étranger.
À la mi-mars, Igor Kurchatov a pris la direction scientifique du Laboratoire n°2. En avril 1946, il fut décidé de créer le bureau d'études KB-11 pour les besoins de ce laboratoire. L'installation top-secrète était située sur le territoire de l'ancien monastère de Sarov, à plusieurs dizaines de kilomètres d'Arzamas.

Les spécialistes du KB-11 étaient censés créer une bombe atomique en utilisant le plutonium comme substance active. Dans le même temps, lors de la création de la première arme nucléaire en URSS, les scientifiques nationaux se sont appuyés sur les conceptions de la bombe américaine au plutonium, testée avec succès en 1945. Cependant, comme la production de plutonium en Union soviétique n'avait pas encore été réalisée, les physiciens ont utilisé au début de l'uranium extrait des mines tchécoslovaques, ainsi que des territoires de l'Allemagne de l'Est, du Kazakhstan et de la Kolyma.
La première bombe atomique soviétique s'appelait RDS-1 (« Special Jet Engine »). Chargez-y quantité suffisante l'uranium et a déclenché une réaction en chaîne dans le réacteur, un groupe de spécialistes dirigé par Kurchatov y est parvenu le 10 juin 1948. L'étape suivante consistait à utiliser du plutonium.
"C'est un éclair atomique"
Dans le plutonium "Fat Man", largué sur Nagasaki le 9 août 1945, des scientifiques américains ont placé 10 kilogrammes de métal radioactif. L’URSS a réussi à accumuler cette quantité de substance en juin 1949. Le chef de l'expérience, Kurchatov, a informé le conservateur du projet atomique, Lavrenty Beria, qu'il était prêt à tester le RDS-1 le 29 août.
Une partie de la steppe kazakhe d'une superficie d'environ 20 kilomètres a été choisie comme terrain d'essai. Dans sa partie centrale, les spécialistes ont construit une tour métallique de près de 40 mètres de haut. C'est là-dessus que fut installé le RDS-1, dont la masse était de 4,7 tonnes.
Le physicien soviétique Igor Golovine décrit la situation sur le site d'essai quelques minutes avant le début des tests : « Tout va bien. Et soudain, dans le silence général, dix minutes avant « l'heure », la voix de Beria se fait entendre : « Mais rien ne marchera pour toi, Igor Vasilyevich ! - « De quoi parles-tu, Lavrenty Pavlovitch ! Cela fonctionnera certainement ! » - S'exclame Kurchatov et continue de regarder, seul son cou est devenu violet et son visage est devenu sombre et concentré.
Pour un éminent scientifique dans le domaine du droit atomique, Abram Ioyrysh, l’état de Kourtchatov ressemble à une expérience religieuse : « Kourtchatov s’est précipité hors de la casemate, a escaladé le rempart de terre et a crié « Elle ! agita largement les bras en répétant : « Elle, elle ! - et l'illumination s'est répandue sur son visage. La colonne d'explosion a tourbillonné et est entrée dans la stratosphère. Une onde de choc approchait du poste de commandement, bien visible sur l'herbe. Kourtchatov se précipita vers elle. Flerov s'est précipité après lui, l'a saisi par la main, l'a traîné de force dans la casemate et a fermé la porte. L'auteur de la biographie de Kurchatov, Piotr Astashenkov, donne à son héros dans les mots suivants: «C'est un éclair atomique. Maintenant, elle est entre nos mains..."
Immédiatement après l'explosion, la tour métallique s'est effondrée et à sa place il ne restait qu'un cratère. Une puissante onde de choc a projeté les ponts routiers à quelques dizaines de mètres et les voitures à proximité se sont dispersées dans les espaces ouverts à près de 70 mètres du lieu de l'explosion.

Un jour, après un autre test, on demanda à Kourtchatov : « Ne vous inquiétez-vous pas du côté moral de cette invention ?
"Vous avez posé une question légitime", a-t-il répondu. "Mais je pense que ce problème est mal abordé." Il vaut mieux ne pas s'adresser à nous, mais à ceux qui ont déchaîné ces forces... Ce qui fait peur, ce n'est pas la physique, mais le jeu d'aventure, pas la science, mais son utilisation par des canailles... Quand la science fait une percée et s'ouvre Si l’on envisage la possibilité d’actions affectant des millions de personnes, il devient nécessaire de repenser les normes morales pour maîtriser ces actions. Mais rien de tel ne s’est produit. Bien au contraire. Pensez-y : le discours de Churchill à Fulton, les bases militaires, les bombardiers le long de nos frontières. Les intentions sont très claires. La science est devenue un outil de chantage et le principal facteur décisif en politique. Pensez-vous vraiment que la moralité les arrêtera ? Et si c’est le cas, et c’est le cas, il faut leur parler dans leur langue. Oui, je sais : les armes que nous avons créées sont des instruments de violence, mais nous avons été obligés de les créer pour éviter des violences encore plus dégoûtantes ! — la réponse du scientifique est décrite dans le livre «A-bomb» d'Abram Ioyrysh et du physicien nucléaire Igor Morokhov.
